DATE: Tuesday 29 August, 1995
PLACE: Tully Cross, Renvyle Peninsular
WEATHER: Overcast, breezy
REMARKS: We wander to Kylemore Abbey, a 19th century gothic
fantasy built to indulge the owner.
Impressive forest setting with a lake in front and built
in lovely grey stone, it now houses Benedictine nuns, formerly
based in Ypres, Belgium. It also now has a school, pottery,
tourist centre (shop, restaurant) and a recently restored
small church. The church is charming, with internal pillars
of marble from Connemara, Kilkenny and Armagh.
A pleasant 1.5 hours is spent in the afternoon fossicking
on a beach beyond Tully. Sarah proves an adept at finding
pieces of Connemara marble, and we begin the 'Stones Collection'
- what will airline scales reveal?
The evening is spent with all of us descending on Mary and
Richard King. We sit to a fine repast of fresh sea-salmon
which is magnificent and fresh and local. Killary Harbour
has not only a mussel farm but also year-round local fishing
rights for salmon.
We visit Killary Cottage, as well as dining in Killary House,
both King haunts, while Desiree (& Michael, Kirsten, and
Sarah) attempt to iron out family connections.
We finish the evening (already very full) with a session
at the Tully Cross pub across the road.
