DATE: Tuesday 1 August, 1995
PLACE: Paris
WEATHER: Hot
REMARKS: The Chateau is shut today! much to our disgust.
We settle for a stroll around the outside.
The drive into Paris is on the autoroute, which is today
busy, and but brief. We then have to find our way about -
very difficult, even when we've bought a map! We have a pension
in prospect, but finding it takes some doing. We're then not
impressed with the attitude of the woman in charge.
The 'Let's go...' book turns up another. Up a lot of rickety
steps but we take it, as it has a private corridor we can
lock and close off so our two rooms effectively are interconnected
and private. The Hotel is only about 10 minutes walk from
the entrance to the Louvre, and one block from Les Halles.
Next: return the car. Again a challenge, but the manager
helps identify the location of the depot. Driving is the final
challenge: through the Place de la Concorde, aIong the Champs
Elysees, around the Arc de Triomphe. I manage by closely following
other cars and going when and where they go.
We find the depot, return the car (and they return us the
tape which has been stuck in the recorder) and call us a cab.
We dine at one of chain of 'Hippo' restaurants opposite
Les Halles.
