DATE: Monday 31 July, 1995
PLACE: Luzern to France
WEATHER: Hot
REMARKS: Breakfasts are getting tedious - rolls and croissants,
and the kids hard to please.
Today is the 'long drive' - using the expressway (in Switzerland)
and autoroute (in France). The aim is to get as close to Paris
as possible so as to leave only a short drive into Paris tomorrow.
The distance is about 540km, and at speeds of l30-l50kph it
disappears fairly quickly.
However the heat and monotony makes for a long day, which
the kids tolerate admirably.
I'm aiming for Fontainebleau - although I don't know why!
We stumble into it at about 1530 and drive right past a glorious
chateau! We stop, investigate, are impressed, Jayne and Charlotte
ride a carousel dated 1900, and have a drink outside a cafe.
Here I watch, intrigued as waiters from competing bars (we're
in one of them) compete for customers from among passersby.
Bed for the night is a rather pricey hotel 5km away in the
village of Thomery - with a pool, in which the girls delight.
They deserve it.
We dine Italian in Fontainebleau.
