DATE: Tuesday 25 July, 1995
PLACE: Tournus
WEATHER: Hot (and getting hotter!)
REMARKS: Tournus is again small scale. The main bridge was
first built in the 11th century, and there are other buildings
with signs indicating ages back to the 1200s.
The Abbey is lovely and cool, with warm, pink-coloured bricks.
It has a number of side chapels and brings to mind the Abbey
in the Brother Cadfael books. It is dedicated to Saint Philibert.
We find food shops and replenish stocks before setting off
up-river.
The next event is a manned lock, in which we are the first
of four. We follow 2 large barges through and have to wait
our turn, indicated by Red (for wait) and Green (for 'I know
you're there') lights.
Through the lock we only travel a short way to Gigny, a
disused lock, where we moor and go ashore for a pause due
to the high temperatures. A swim ends in disgust as the kids
discover raw sewage in the river.
It looks like we'll stay the night here as it is quite sheltered.
We dine aboard and settle; during the night the wind comes
up and we have to secure furniture and washing.
